Jefferson Girl's Take Crown With 50-40 WinWritten by Don Francis Sunday, 14 March 2010 12:14 Hits: 749 There is the 'Six degrees of Seperation' but to the Wilsonville girls, it was a matter of the "Ten Points of Seperation' that was the difference as Jefferson jumped to a quick 10-0 lead and never looked back in the OSAA Girls 5A Championship Game. The Jefferson girls gave Head Coach Ikeya Newton a state crown in her very first year at the helm. Crater Holds Off Ashland for Third Place 54-51Written by Don Francis Sunday, 14 March 2010 11:05 Hits: 594 If Crater's girls basketball team was a dormant field of flowers, then Ashland was their winter of discontent as the Comets could not get past their league rival. In the four previous games against their league nemisis this season, Crater fell four consecutive times. That finally came to an end Saturday when under the warmth of the Mac Court scoreboard, they blossomed in a dizzying array of spectacular colors. We hear 'third times a charm,' but the saying 'fifth times a charm' belongs to the Crater girls as they walked away with the OSAA Third Place Trophy in easily their sweetest win of the season. 6A Girls – Championship GameWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Saturday, 13 March 2010 21:10 Hits: 948 Southridge Claims Fifth State Championship

6A Girls – 3rd Place GameWritten by Andrew Millbrooke Saturday, 13 March 2010 15:27 Hits: 286 Pioneers Earn 3rd Place Trophy, Defeat Axemen 61-56
(Portland) – Oregon City (28-1) took an early lead, then withstood a furious fourth quarter rally by the South Eugene Axemen (25-5), pulling out a 61-56 victory in the 3rd place game in the afternoon session at the Rose Garden on Saturday. The Pioneers rebounded to win the third place trophy, after suffering its first loss in 37 games in the semi-finals on Friday to Southridge. “It was a huge disappointment,” Oregon City coach Kurt Guelsdorf said of the loss. “There is an expectation level here to be playing on Saturday night. If you can’t win it all, you want to end with a win.” Oregon City has been the dominant team in girls basketball for the past two decades, winning 11 titles and playing in the state tournament for 26 straight seasons. “There is a lot of pride in Oregon City basketball,” Guelsdorf added. “We’re going to play hard and play with a lot of pride.” South Eugene returns four solid juniors that played big minutes this season and should be a factor again next season in the state championship picture. “Steve (Eastburn) does a great job with their program,” Guelsdorf said. “The Eugene area has a lot of basketball talent.” Cottage Grove Takes Marist For SkyEm, And State, Bragging RightsWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 13 March 2010 15:08 Hits: 2601 Lions Get 53-51 'Last Word' On The Marist 4A Chapter
The Lions claimed the top seed from the tough SkyEm Conference, the only conference to advance three teams to a 4A tournament, but it was mostly a formality, as the rubber game of the series has been on both teams "dashboard" every since.
Marist returns to the tournament in their last year in 4A before moving to 5A, after a one year absence that broke the longest tournament run in the stat. Cottage Grove lost last year's 4A title game to yet another SkyEm squad, 40-32 to La Pine, who also claimed the third place trophy this year.
Coach Michelle Quist's Spartans are led by All-SkyEm first team selections Allie Rogers and Nikki Demers, while the Lions, coached by SkyEm Coach of the Year Kerry Clawson, counter with the SkyEm Co-Player of the Year Reed Levings, and first teamer Jordan Brunetti.
Dorian Perkey returned to the Lions starting lineup, in the interest of speed, vs. Daina Tague, who started against the big La Pine lineup.
Mackey Dennis got the start for Marist, after struggling with her left knee, still in a brace, against Central.
After what has been a sparsely attended tournament, the lower bowl at Gill was mostly full except for the upper end zones for the conference rivalry game, the second year in a row the SkyEm's top two teams settled their differences at Gill.

The Quakers beat themselves with wild shots and undisciplined play long before their star guard Shoni Schimmel was disqualified for her fifth foul (the technical) with 2:27 remaining in the game and McNary leading 52-46.

Shoni, still unsigned with a major college, was signing autographs for young fans 10 minutes after the game was over. Franklin connected on just 5 of 30 three-pointers as McNary dominated the rebounding, holding a 47-26 edge. The Panthers re-inserted Mary Jo Pflaum into the starting lineup, choosing to same minutes for the taller Jazzlyn Wilder against Conditt ntil later.
The Hawks also made a change, going larger, with 5'9" Catarina Larkin in the starting lineup, in place of the injured Sammie Mellott. out with a knee injury suffered in the semi-final loss.

The Ontario band, which accounted for the majority of the people in the building when warmups began, lived up to their reputation, by showing up from farther away than anyone. Carly Bull woke the crowd up with a three pointer, and Cascade opened an 8-2 lead in the first five minutes, as Ontario started cold from the field, but rallied to trail only 10-8 after one period.

Jesuit Douses the South Eugene Dream 61-46Written by Don Francis Friday, 12 March 2010 23:35 Hits: 252 For South Eugene, the task of taking dual back to back victories over Portland's girl basketball powerhouses Central Catholic and Jesuit proved too much. For Jesuit it was sweet revenge and a shot at the one state title that has eluded them, a girls state basketball championship. After a close first half, the Crusaders slowly squeezed the Lady Axemen and marched into another chance for redemption when they take on Metro Champion Southridge tommorow at 7pm at the Rose Garden. If you could put a coat and tie on him and hand him a rolled up program, Jesuit Head Coach Mike McNeal would bear a striking resemblance to a young John Wooden. In Friday's semi-final his girls did all the things required of a championship team. They executed. In doing so, they also executed the dreams of a South Eugene team who had been aiming at this year to take the title only to see it disappear in a slew of turnovers and an inability to keep the Metro League runner-ups off the offensive glass. 2009 Championship Rematch Between Cottage Grove And LaPine A Lion RoutWritten by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Friday, 12 March 2010 10:36 Hits: 1513 Lions Roar to a 52-40 Win, And Another Rematch, With Marist

(Portland) – Southridge (26-2) stormed back from a 10 point halftime deficit, outscoring the Crusaders 21-3 over a 10 minute stretch to claim its fifth 6A girls title in the past six seasons with a 47-38 victory over league rival Jesuit (22-7) in the state championship game at the Rose Garden on Saturday night. The Skyhawks kept up intense full-court pressure defense the entire second half by rotating fresh bodies, finally wearing down the Crusaders in the final quarter. “It feels great to come back and do what we needed to do to get the win,” 5’9 junior Allison Greene said. “Once we got going on our run, it was over.” "It's amazing, a dream come true," 5'6 senior Dominique Johnson said. "I'm so proud of this team. I love my team."
The Marist Spartans, making their last appearance in 4A before moving up to 5A, and the Cottage Grove Lions, who split their regular season meetings, with the Lions winning 64-49 at the Grove, and the Spartans 49-42 in the rematch in the Holy Dome.
The hardest game to play is often the third place game, so soon after seeing a shot at the championship slip away. For the La Pine Hawks, just a year removed from winning the title, not getting another shot had to be especially disappointing, as the high school career came to an end for Kassi Conditt, one of the more dominant players in recent 4A history.
Michael Meeks and his Southridge Skyhawks (25-2) must be living the 'good life.' With Oregon City (27-1) breathing down their necks in an intense final eight minutes, they calmly went to the free throw line and during one stretch coverted three of 12 free throws. Thats 25% of their attempts. More amazing, during that stretch, they actually increased their lead as they rallied in the fourth quarter to move into Saturday's Championship Game against Jesuit thanks to what Jack Black lovingly refers to as "Tenacious D."
The SkyEm conference was guaranteed a spot in the finals after the quarterfinals, as the defending champion La Pine Hawks, the conference third seed, earned another shot at the conference's champions, the Cottage Grove Lions, but this time in the semifinals, instead of the championship game.
