East Opens Evening With 4A Win

The 4A East squad almost went wire to wire, but had to work late for a 67-65 win. The West tied the game twice in the first half, and again at the 13:25 mark, on a layup by Junction City's Kayla Rauschert. The North Marion duet of Makesha Bizon and Alma Silva-Ramirez responded with a 6 point run, which started the East on their way back to a 10 point margin.

The West didn't take their only lead of the game until Newport's Rylee Petersen hit a 3 point shot with 2:26 left, only to see Molalla's Erica Filipetti answer with four straight points. Petersen and Rauschert pulled the West within 1 with 28 seconds left, then the teams traded weird mistakes.

With 2.2 seconds left, Silva-Ramirez intentionally missed a free throw, but didn't hit the rim, resulting in a violation when the East got the rebound. However, the West tried a baseline pass on the inbounds play, legal ONLY off a made basket, turning the ball back over. Silva-Ramirez then iced the game with another free throw.

Petersen led all scorers with 17 points, and Rauschert added 14 for the West. Filipetti and Silva-Ramirez led the East with 10 points apiece. The difference was rebounding, as the East held a 62-44 advantage, which more than overcame an 18-8 West advantage on steals.

Newport’s Rylee Petersen drives past Ontario’s Ala Dzhidzhiyeshvili (34).

Cascade’s Jessica Rouse (33) grabs a rebound from Tillamook’s Melissa Waud (14) and Newport’s Rylee Petersen (11).

Seaside’s Marla Olstedt (5) makes a layin.

North Marion’s Alva Silva-Ramirez (23) drives between Newport’s Rylee Petersen (l.) (11) and South Umpqua’s Chelsea Duffy (21).

Junction City’s Kayla Rauschert (24) battles Cascade’s Alicia Tuttle (30) for rebounding position.

Gladstone’s Lisa Terry (12) works the ball against Elmira’s Michelle Sconce.

West Wins 2A Tilt

Heppner's Megan Orr hit a three point basket to open the game, but after that the West never trailed, winning 73-67. Playing with only 7 players, the West always had at least 2 Glendale players on the floor, and built a 17 point halftime lead, and extended the margin to 20 points by 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.

The East, comprised mostly of the Tri-River Conference, with seven representatives, used depth to wear down the East, and pulled back within 4 points, but despite an 18 point second half by Santiam's Kim Hoover, who finished with 20 points, the East could never quite overcome the enormous margin the West had built up.

Glendale's Gretchen Owens led all scorers with 22 points, but it was Chiloquin's Dani Case, who scored 18 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and handed out 3 assists who made the difference in the game. Portland Christian's Kim Hill, the two time 2A Player of the Year, was held to 12 points, but made the East pay for their misses with 17 rebounds, all on the defensive end.

Portland Christian’s Kim Hill (31) shoots over Salam Academy’s Elizabeth Beatty and Santiam’s Sara Wellsandt, as Kennedy’s Rosie Boschler (22) looks on.

Chiloquin’s Dani Case (12) had 18 points Friday, and a game high 25 on Saturday.

Glendale’s Gretchen Owens (14), who had 22 points to lead the West Friday, drives past Santiam’s Kim Hoover (44), who led the East with 20.

Portland Christian’s Kim Hill (31) shoots over a Tri-River conference double team.

Santiam’s Kim Hoover led the East comeback Friday with 18 of her 20 points in the second half, and led the East to victory Saturday with 19 more.

Kennedy’s Natalie Fleck (54) defends Portland Christian’s Kim Hill. Fleck had 10 rebounds in the series.

East Earns 3A Win

In a close game, where the largest margin was 7 points, and the lead changed hands more than in the other 2 games combined, the East pulled out a 64-61 win when Grant Union's Sabrina Hoffman hit a jumper with 1:21 left. Toledo's Beth Stam led the East with 14 points, while Hoffman had 13 off the bench. Valley Catholic's Lisa Gallinat led the West with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Willamina's Randi Keyser also had a double double for the West, with 13 rebounds and 11 points.

The East won despite being out-boarded 64-45, and hitting only 4 of 23 shots from behind the three point line.

Valley Catholic’s Lisa Gallinat (54) dribbles the baseline while guarded by Harrisburg’s Erica Traw (20).

Westside Christian’s Jessica Monroe (40) shoots over Toledo’s Beth Stam, while Nicole Hardisty (22) of Valley Catholic trails the play.

Willamina’s Randy Keyser (22) pushes the ball upcourt against Grant Union’s Sabrina Hoffman.

Valley Catholic’s Nicole Hardisty (22) drives around a pick set by Santiam Christian’s Tiffany Land (12) to escape pressure from Coquille’s Kalei Libby (32) and Waldport’s Hallie Price (1).

Reedsport’s Hannah Smith (13) brings the ball upcourt.

Toledo’s Beth Stam (23) led the East in scoring both days, with 14 points Friday and 18 Saturday.

4A West Earns Split Saturday

Saturday’s game saw the West earn a split in this year’s series, winning 61-51. The East found themselves down 27-19 at halftime, due to cold shooting, as the East made only five of 30 first half shots, 17%.

The West held onto the lead after a closely played second half. Petersen again led all scorers, with 15, and also had a game high 11 rebounds. Seaside's Marla Olstedt added 14 points for the West.

Cascade's Jessica Rouse led the East on the boards Saturday, with 10 rebounds, as well as scoring five points. The East again out-rebounded the West, but the margin was much closer than in Friday’s game.

The West again out-shot the East from the field in the second half, and no one for the East was in double figures scoring for the game, as shooting was the determining factor in the second game. Gladstone's Lisa Terry and Ontario's Ala Dzhidzhiyesvili, co-led the East in scoring, with eight points apiece Saturday.

2A East Wears Down West For Split

After Friday's East comeback came up just short, East Co-Coach Joy Lease of Santiam noted "We just got too far behind early. We'll get them tomorrow, though, they will be tired." And, it turned out, without Hill.

Playing without Hill on Saturday, the further depleted West did indeed wear down, as the East jumped to a 19 point, 45-26 halftime lead. The second half was more of the same, as the East pulled away to win 88-62, and gain a split in this year’s series. Hoover again led the East with 19 point, and also pulled down seven rebounds, while four others were in double figures for the East. Salem Academy’s Elizabeth Beatty, another key part of the Tri-River assault squad, had 10 points and seven rebounds Saturday.

Case led everyone with 25 points for the West, and just missed a double double, with nine rebounds, and Owens added 20 more points, on 12 of 15 free throw shooting. Glendale’s Ashley Marriott dominated the boards, with 20 rebounds, but the seven Tri-River players combined for 37 rebounds.

Even without Hill’s presence, the still larger West squad again got to the line numerous times, and made 26 of 35 shots, compared to 11 of 18 for the East. But the key to stopping the West was turnovers. The East forced 26, which translated into 33 more shots, and produced the 26 point margin of victory.

3A East Completes Sweep

The 3A East claimed a 67-63 win to close the series for the year, and claim the only sweep. The West held a one point halftime lead, up 33-32, but sharper second half shooting carried the East to the four point comeback win.

Stam led three East players in double figures, with 18 points, while Gallinat led everyone in scoring and rebounding for the West, with a double double, 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Monroe of Westside Christian had a 10 point, 10 rebound double double for the West, and Santiam Christian's Tiffany Land added an 11 point, 10 rebound double double for the West as well.

However, the East had better balance, and better shooting, and also made six three pointers, compared to none from long range for the West, to overcome the high individual performances of the West.
