Never mind that some of Washingtons players like UW bound Kristi Kingma were off cavorting for Spring Break. When you have the biggest gunslinger in all the land then you let her come out shooting and good things will happen and thats what happened Sunday afternoon at the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout as Ashley Corral led the Washington All Stars to their second straight win with a convincing 100-77 victory.
There was an optimistic feel at the outset for Oregon fans as the roster was stoked with a bevy of college bound talent. With a height advantage and Washington only having a single true post on the roster, Oregon never could get the mojo working and Corral made amends from the previous week when she struggled from the field at the McDonalds All Star Classic. Early on, the USC bound Prairie grad nailed back to back three's and Washington surged to an early lead they would never relinquish. Shortly after the opening tip, one had the sense the Washington had the quicker hands as every loose ball seemed to go to them. The Evergreen State also had the shots fall their way as by halftime, Washington led 48-37 thanks mainly from Corral's four of five shooting from three point range. I'd not have wanted to be the USC Womens Basketball Coach for a moment just before halftime when Southridge's Michelle Jenkins and Corral exploded into one another and both USC commits went flying in opposite directions and laid of the floor for a few anxious seconds. The hotter hand belonged to Washington as they managed to shoot 44% from the field and went 50% from three-land on 8-16. Meanwhile Oregon couldn't hit the soft fluffy bunnies or the long bombs and converted 1 of 8 from three point range and a paltry 32% overall. If there was one defining moment for the entire game, it happened in the second half when Oregon began to rally back after trailing 64-44. Suddenly Anna Marchbanks converted a three point play and Alex Earl hit a free throw to pull within 68-57 when Washington missed a shot and Sheldon's Theresa Brown cleared the rebound looking downcourt for someone to cut the lead back to single digits with ten minutes left in the half. Instead, enter the assassin Corral who knocked the ball out of Browns hands and cornered the steal just behind the three point arc and nailed a deep swisher. Then Mt Tahoma's Stauneice Samms stole the following inbound and converted a three point play. A few minutes later it was 84-64 and the game was out of reach for the hopeful Oregon team. Key to the Game: Oregon shot just 2-16 from Three Point Range while Washington was 13-31. Most other hustle board stats were pretty even. Washington only made three more field goals and two more free throws for the game. Players that looked good for Oregon: Anna Marchbanks-Not a lot of folks got to watch her for McKay. They never played in Portland and McKay didn't go deep into the playoffs but Marchbanks hustled and finished with team high 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Not tall, she's active around the boards and gets a lot of putbacks. She was my MVP and she played fewer minutes than any other Oregon player. She reminds me of a more rugged Hillary Sell in style and hustle and the ability to always be around the ball. Erica Shultz-North Medfords stud also had a strong game taking the ball to the basket and didn't make mistakes. She would finish with 11 points and kept Oregon in the game the first half. Jenkins and Earl-Maybe the last time we'll say these two names as teammates as they leave a legacy with state championships in all four of their years at Southridge. Jenkins would get the only double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Alex Earl would tie Marchbanks with 13 points account for the only two three pointers Oregon could muster all afternoon. Washington Players That Shined: Ashley Corral-Would finish with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists including one stellar behind the back to Kayla Standish who converted the lay-up with a two on one break after Corral had stole the ball. She was the games MVP. No contest there. Brianne Ryan-Was second high scorer for her team with 15 points thanks to three of four from three point range. The Eastern Washington bound wing also added three rebounds and three steals. Eryn Jones and Stephanie Egwuatu-These two future Portland State players have Coach Murrell smiling as Jones had 13 points and Egwuatu had six. Stauniece Samms-She impressed me more than any other player if only becuase she was the most consistent post player for Washington as she had 12 points and six rebounds to go with three blocks but her defense around the backet made it a chore for Oregons posts to get get any 'bunnies' all night long. Kayla Standish-the tallest player on the WA roster at 6'2, this future "Zag" also proved she had a sweet deep shot going 2-4 from behind the arc. She'd tally eight points and lead her team in rebounds with eight.
