Second Offense Sends 14 Year Coach To Sidelines
Kathryn Adelman Naro posted a $9,000 bail bond Thursday, and also submitted her resignation to Jesuit High School. Adelman-Naro, who led the Crusaders to the playoffs all of her 14 seasons as head coach, was picked up last month and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants. It was her second arrest in less than a year.
Adelman-Naro was previously arrested for a Sept. 26, 2008 incident, on accusations of careless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Because it was her first such violation, Adelman-Naro was allowed to plead guilty to drunken driving, and enter a diversion program last October, according to Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Bob Ray.
The second offense violated her diversion program conditions, and a bench warrant was issued for her arrest. She was released Thursday after posting bail, and also submitted her resignation to the Catholic School.
(Updated 9/18 with interim hire.)
Adelman-Naro spent two years as as assistant coach and English teacher at Jesuit before being named the head coach, and led the Crusaders to four Metro league titles, and twice to the state championship game, in 2003, where Jesuit lost to Oregon City, and again in 2007, when the Crusaders fell to Metro League rival Southridge.
Jesuit's athletic director, Mike Hughes, said Adelman Naro resigned "for health and family reasons."
Adelman-Naro is the sister of Lincoln High boys' Basketball coach David Adelman, who was also arrested on drunk driving charges for the second time in four years last February. David Adelman's contract at Lincoln was renewed after district officials met with him, and "were satisfied that his conduct on and off duty would meet our standards," according to Matt Shelby of the Portland Public School District.
Both Adelmans are the children of Houston Rockets Coach Rick Adelman, who was also coach of the Portland Trail Blazers from 1988 to 1994.
Longtime Jesuit assistant Mike McNeal will become the interim coach of the Crusaders, as he did during the second half of the 2007-08 season, when Adelman-Naro was hospitalized for an undisclosed illness.
After leading the Crusaders to a 15-12 record, and second place in the Metro League, McNeal was voted the league's Coach of the Year.
"We'll do a formal search, and make a permanent hire in the spring," Jesuit athletic director Mike Hughes said. "Mike (McNeal) will be asked to apply. As much as possible, we try to hire coaches when we're hiring teachers in May."
Hughes also reported that the school has hired Mary Hauser as an assistant coach. Hauser was a star player at Mater Dei in California, and also went on to lead the school in Santa Ana to the state championship in 1996.
