As Rip Torn said to a group of hand picked recruits in "Men In Black," "You're here because you're the best of the best,"  it would be easy to picture Nike's Mary Thompson echoing the same lament to a select group in the sequel "Girls in Swoosh." Afterall, it was a top secret installation holding a tryout for those who can do freakish things others dare dream of.

It was a collection of "Who's Who in Women's Basketball" all compiled in Nike's Bo Jackson Gym to witness the 2008 Girls Skills Academy which had attracted the nations top twenty high school girls players. To put it in perspective, Oregon City's legendary coach Brad Smith came over and gushed "Did you see me on the clock? I was solid!" Brad was proud to be tabbed as the 'clock boy' and he did a great job. Everybody who could sneak in was there to see the evolution of girls basketball. Her name is Brittney Griner.

There were 26 teams rolling into 'Chemistry Lab' at Southridge over the weekend. While everyone wants to win, this is a time of year smart coaches will take their lumps in exchange for wins next March. There are those teams fortunate to return their nucleus where wins will be easy. Then there will be those teams decimated with graduation (or for the 6A OL pundit...transferring out) where the rebuilding process can be painful if not downright ugly at time. Some of these teams will be like the newborn gazelle getting its legs under it before it soon can outrun its predator. Other teams will sadly be like the myopic zebra at the waterhole after the others have left and the water has a small wake with a pair of eyes fast approaching.

After covering the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout at Chiles Center last weekend, walking out of the gym was like closing the book on the 2008 Season. I took a moment to reflect upon the past year and want to wrap up the season with these following thoughts. There where some girls that will always be poignant chapters to recall in the minds eye. Some happy, some tragic, some bittersweet but above all, revolving around the game that is an integral part of my life. In some ways this is my Senior All StarTeam. They deserve one last shout out.

Never mind that some of Washingtons players like UW bound Kristi Kingma were off cavorting for Spring Break. When you have the biggest gunslinger in all the land then you let her come out shooting and good things will happen and thats what happened Sunday afternoon at the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout as Ashley Corral led the Washington All Stars to their second straight win with a convincing 100-77 victory.

Rylee Peterson Tops All Scorers PDF Print E-mail

The scrappy, 5'11 senior forward from Newport, OR (Valco League) tops all scorers this season in all classifications, 1A-6A.  With an impressive 25.8 points per game and a 47.2% FG average, Rylee stands alone at the head of the pack.

I have heard over and over from various sports buffs, "The Valco is weak this year, easy to score in a weak league".  But contrary to what many believe, besides the Valco League, Rylee has put these same numbers up against 4A Teams across the State.   Ask any of the coaches in the Valco league how easy it is to guard Peterson, they'll all tell you the same line, "She's very difficult to guard because of her versatility, she can shoot the three with ease then come  down the floor, drive the lane, score and draw the foul".

When Henley scouted Newport early March in preparation for their 2nd round play-off game they knew that in order to beat Newport it meant stopping Peterson.  Try as they may with double and triple teams, Rylee still managed to score her usual 25 points and garnish her Cub Team with the rights to play at Gill Coliseum.

Spartans Scratch out 36-31 Win over Eagles!

The Eagles (19-12) beat the Spartans (21-10) 33-24 the first week in December by making 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, and 22 of 29 for the game, to overcome only five made field goals.

Since then, the Spartans and the Eagles have traveled similar paths. Both finished fourth in very difficult leagues, and each had to win two playoff game in order to get the opportunity to win two more to get to the tournament.
