Early Signing Window Sees Crusader Guard Follow Her Father To Corvallis
On the first day that basketball recruits can commit in the early signing period, Oregon St. has landed two players for the 2010-11 season.
Combo guard Alyssa Martin from Jesuit High School in Portland, and guard Classye James from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., signed their letters today, officially becoming Beavers.
Martin, a 6'0" combo guard, and the daughter of former mens' basketball player Earl Martin, who played for Ralph Miller, will join the Beavers after graduating from Jesuit. Last season, she led Jesuit to a 23-5 record, the Metro League Championship, and a fourth place finish at the 2009 6A State Championship. She was named to the Metro League First Team, and was an all-state honorable mention selection, having averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. Martin shot 46% from the field, and 41% percent on three pointers.

Adelman-Naro Resigns Jesuit Post After DUII Incident
Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Friday, 18 September 2009 06:08 Hits: 820
Second Offense Sends 14 Year Coach To Sidelines
Kathryn Adelman Naro posted a $9,000 bail bond Thursday, and also submitted her resignation to Jesuit High School. Adelman-Naro, who led the Crusaders to the playoffs all of her 14 seasons as head coach, was picked up last month and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants. It was her second arrest in less than a year.
Adelman-Naro was previously arrested for a Sept. 26, 2008 incident, on accusations of careless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Because it was her first such violation, Adelman-Naro was allowed to plead guilty to drunken driving, and enter a diversion program last October, according to Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Bob Ray.
The second offense violated her diversion program conditions, and a bench warrant was issued for her arrest. She was released Thursday after posting bail, and also submitted her resignation to the Catholic School.
(Updated 9/18 with interim hire.)
Cipole's Girls Hoop Roundup

Having spent the past two weekends at Southridge and West Linn's tournaments, I'm already going out on a limb with some early observations and prognostications.
*Glen Lee of West Linn easily defeated Southridge's poohbah Michael Meek's in the "Head to Head Bracket Design Competition." Two weeks ago, by Saturday afternoon, folks were looking at the Southridge brackets in dazed confusion. Someone out at Aloha had ripped the bracket off the wall, laid it on the floor and was brushing on lemon juice and hitting it with a hair dryer. Jesuit brought in their on staff resident "Egyptologist" who specializes in sanskrit in hopes their interpretation of playing Molalla JV in the semi-final was incorrect.
Nowhere did the website offer the "Michael Meeks" secret decoder ring. Meanwhile, this weekend at West Linn, the brackets were like a "Dick and Jane' primary book. Still, I accidentally spit a mouth full of lukewarm coffee in some poor souls face on Saturday when he asked me "How's someone supposed to read this thing?" Oh, Lee also was much more skilled at meteorology skills while Meeks whiffed with the old 100 degree gym. Who'd a thunk you want to play at Aloha over Southridge? I did....I did.
Washington Girls Win NW Shootout 75-65
Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Sunday, 19 April 2009 09:21 Hits: 511
23-7 Run Breaks Open Tie Game
The Washington all star squad, featuring nine players committed to Division I programs, used a 23-7 second half run to break open the game, and defeat the Oregon team by ten points. The 75-65 win at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus was Washington's second consecutive win in the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout, and gives Washington a 9-7 edge in the series.
Washington lead by four points early in the second half, but Newberg's Hannah Munger connected on a pair of free throws, and then Tigard's Corinn Waltrip's layup tied the game at 39-39. But then Washington opened up a 16 point lead, with the 23-7 run, effectivele ending Oregon's hopes.

Successful Santiam coach steps down
Mill City - Joy Lease, who has led the Santiam Wolverines girls' basketball program the last six sesaons, stepped down last week. After capping the season with a 48-37 win over Nestucca on Sat. March 7th. to claim the OSAA state 2A title, Lease is leaving along with the senior core group that went 107-9 over the last four seasons. Four of the five losses in the last three years were to teams that would go on to win a state title.
"The time is right to look to at something new," Lease said of her surprise departure. "I'm working on some possibilities, but nothing is finalized yet. I have submitted my resignation as coach, though."
Cottage Grove Can't Conquer La Pine for the Championship

Third Time the Charm?
The second ranked Lions defeated the seventh ranked Hawks twice during the SkyEm season, winning 54-45 at home, and by a slightly larger 55-43 margin in La Pine. Can they complete the trifecta, or will the Hawks have figured out how to stop CG? And especially Kaitlyn Kronberg, who has been subpar (by her standards) so far in the tournament for the Lions, battling the bug that has probably won more games this season than all the teams here combined.
KK led all scorers in both contests, first with 18, and then 24 in the rare Central Oregon air. Kassi Conditt, a top volleyball prospect as well, led La Pine with 14 in the Grove, and had 11 in La Pine, when Maria Ramirez led the Hawks, with 14.
Sutherlin Fights Back Against YC For Third
Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 14 March 2009 11:14 Hits: 481
Bulldogs and Tigers Look to Bounce Back
For nine Sutherlin Seniors, last night's disappointment can't be allowed to be come a losing streak, something they haven't experienced since 2007. And cause for a long moment of quiet reflection in the pregame huddle.
For the young YC squad, with three underclass starters, the chance to get a third place finish is a bonus to a great turnaround for a team coming off a five win season.
And each rebound Elle Anderson gets will set a new tournament record.
Stayton Edges Hidden Valley 35-33 for Fourth
Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Saturday, 14 March 2009 07:10 Hits: 399
Playing on the Last Day of the Season
Teams win games, but programs win lots of games. Hidden Valley and Stayton win a lot of games. And even when they don't win it all, they leave themselves in position to win again. That approach got the Eagles and the Mustangs an opportunity most teams don't get, the chance to play on the last day of the season.
"That first day game really took a toll on us," Stayton Coach Jake Miller said. "We started a little slow against Philomath," in their 42-28 second day win, "but I'm as proud of the way they rallied as anything."
Hidden Valley had to be just as disappointed after a heart wrenching effort against Sutherlin fell short, but the playoff experienced Mustangs recovered for a 39-27 morning win over Molalla.
So the last day of the season unfolds, and the merits of a tub of buttery popcorn for breakfast are explored. Only in the breakfast bracket...
