All the Big Boys Come Out To Play Now

It’s the biggest week of the playoffs, with eight games on the schedule. None of the two seeds in action the first week were knocked out, and the only upset was Pleasant Hill downing a ranked Newport team. The Cowapa continued to flex its muscles, with the two largest margins of victory.

"Another Civil War to Decide Rose Bowl Game...Yawnnn"

Football - Football News

Written by Cipole Monday, 16 November 2009 16:23    Hits: 1251

I'm telling you, these Civil War games with a Rose Bowl berth on the line are getting so ho-hum. It would mark the third time in this decade alone that it could happen with a couple of firsts. This could pan out where its a 'winner takes the Roses' game for the first time in 45 years. The 2000 game was the Ducks to lose...and they did.  The 2008 was the Beavers to lose...and they did. For the first time in this decade or even millennia, the game will be decided in Autzen and not Reser and both are masters of their own destiny. If you'd sat in the stands in the late 1970's and mumbled in a drunken stupor (as thats all most people did at Beaver and Duck games back in that era) the Beavs and Ducks would both be playing for Rose Bowl berths on a regular basis in 30 years, your friends would call the paramedics to have you taken away for alcohol poisoning. Nostradamus wrote a long quattrain explaining the whole thing it has been said.

Perry Leads Central Catholic to 56-34 Win Over Newberg

On paper it looked like it might be a good close game. Central Catholic senior quarterback Jordan Perry had other idea's. After falling behind 7-0 to Newberg, Perry would finish out the first half and go 15-19 for 259 yards and toss three touchdown passes to lead the Rams to a 35-14 lead at the half and they would never look back.

Would you consider reading a 3A playoff preview filled with rankings and ratings written by someone who has never seen any of the teams play this season?  But wait, what if it was written by someone who picked the most 3A games correctly in the Pick ‘Em Challenge over the entire season?   If you answered no to both questions…stop reading.  If you are curious, I hope you enjoy the read.

Eagles and Pirates Wrap Up Last Two Conference Titles

Stayton used 13 second half points to claim the last Capital Conference title, and the Eagles' first in 39 years, with a 13-0 win over North Marion. The eighth ranked Eagles’ win relegated the Huskies to third, and also eliminated Estacada, despite the Rangers’ 32-7 win over La Salle. Cascade, who easily won the Cougar Clash, defeating Illinois Valley 28-6 for their fifth straight win, claimed the second seed, and a second round date with #1 Marist.

The Phoenix Pirates swatted the Henley Hornets off the field, claiming the Skyline championship with a 54-6 runaway, sparked by Justin Bohn, who returned both a punt and an interception for touchdowns, and also caught two of Chris Kammel’s five touchdown passes.

Sutherlin claimed second in the Far West, and a second round trip to the hive to face Henley, with a 48-33 win over Siuslaw in Florence, but league champion Douglas’ 33-0 win over South Umpqua still let the Vikings back into the playoffs.

Sisters took care of business in Cottage Grove to the tune of a 33-21 win, but still missed the postseason when Pleasant Hill handled La Pine 53-32 to claim the third berth from the SkyEm.

Scappoose took Tillamook out in the battle for the third berth from the Cowapa with a 63-15 runaway, and Newport claimed the third spot from the Valco with their 42-19 win in Taft, which brought the Jack Wilkinson era to a close after 28 years on a losing note.

Knappa set to defend 2A title after impressive win

_DSC5408_edited-1Despite having three touchdowns called back on penalties, #1 Knappa showed why the defending 2A champs remain the team to beat in 2009 following a convincing 35-18 win at #8 Portland Christian Friday night. Junior Bryan Sablan rushed for 241 yards on 22 carries and three TD’s to lead a relentless Logger ground attack that amassed more than 400 yards on the ground in the final three quarters.

Aloha In State Playoffs..Say What?!?!

Johnathan Shaffers two fourth quarter rushing touchdowns rallied Aloha from a 17-13 deficit past Beaverton and into the playoffs for the first time since 1986. The 27-17 win gave Aloha the Metro #3 Seed. To put things in perspective, not a single Aloha High School student was born the last time the Warriors made the Oregon High School football playoffs. The top song was Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchies "We Are The World," nobody owned cell phones let alone had ever heard of them and Ronald Reagan was President. Chew on that.

Championships At Stake In Capital, Skyline

Marist and Central wasted no time in claiming the championships of the SkyEm and the Valco, while Douglas had to work for the FarWest title.

Phoenix and Henley set up a showdown on the Skyline, and Ontario claimed the I-84 showdown.

Astoria took care of a formality called beating the ‘Mooks to lock up the Cowapa, and the Capital was already ticketed for a showdown on the last night.

2A Championship Week Preview

League Titles and OSAA berths at stake Friday night.

The final week of the 2009 regular season 2A schedule serves as a de facto district seeding playoff. League championships and top OSAA seeds are on the line in all five 2A districts. Headlining Friday’s action will be #1 Knappa (8-0, 4-0) @ Portland Christian (7-2, 4-0). Meanwhile, the MVC has three teams locked at 5-1, with all four district seeds up for grabs. The TRC, SCL, and BMC champions are not finalized yet, giving 2A fans from the Columbia Basin to the California border a terrific final week of small-school gridiron action.

Unlike almost every other sport, football does not use a district playoff system to determine OSAA seeding. Even ties in the standings are decided by SOP formulas. So it is quite rare and enjoyable to see the scheduling gods bestow upon 2A fans such a terrific final week of football with all five districts hosting several key games that may make or break a team’s playoff hopes.

In a game that had all the looks of heading toward a Kansas Plan Overtime, Tualatin had something else in mind. Back on their own 28 yard line with under a minute and facing a Second and 22, quarterback Matt Yarborough hooked up twice with his ace reciever Christian Pierson. The first for 34 yards and then with 26 seconds left, again for 38 yards and the winning touchdown to break a 20-20 tie and vault into second place in the Pacific Conference. They can claim the runner-up spot and #2 Pacific Conference Seed with a win over Tigard next week.

18 Players At Practice Not Enough

Tonight's non-conference game between the Sprague Olympians and the Lake Oswego Lakers is the latest game to be cancelled due to illness outbreaks, and the first at the 6A level.

Approximately 400 students were absent Tuesday from Sprague, and the number climbed to 600 midweek. As a result, only 18 players were available for practice, and less than a dozen of the varsity.

Sprague (5-2, 3-2) has already clinched a playoff berth from the Central Valley conference, holding a tie-breaker over all the teams below them in the standings who could catch them, and has two weeks to get healthy, with only a road game to winless Redmond remaining.

Valco, GOL Titles On The Line In Games of the Week

Sweet Home and Central both rolled on the coast, setting up a neutral site showdown in Corvallis for the Valco championship, while Ontario has the home field advantage in the defacto GOL championship game.

No one is in yet in the SkyEm, but Marist can lock up the title with a win over Pleasant Hill, and the same is true in the Far West, where no one is in yet, but a Douglas win in Sutherlin clinches the title for the Trojans.
