The May 11th. meeting of the OSAA Classification and Districting Committee for the 2010-2014 four year time block produced an eighth draft proposal (maps). Much of the discussion revolved around whether eastern Oregon 5A teams Hermiston and Pendleton should be placed in the largely western Oregon based East Metro League, or the central Oregon Hybrid, comprised of current and historic members of the Intermountaion League.
Hermiston and Pendleton had expressed a desire to become Metro schools, primarily because it would actually become an I-84 league, as Hood River and The Dalles-Wahtonka are also ticketed for this circuit, along with westside schools Milwaukie, Molalla, Parkrose, Putnam, and Sandy. However, the westside and gorge schools wanted nothing to do with the trips east on I-84.
Band Championships a Mix of Old and NewBlogs - CCCougarfan Blog Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Thursday, 14 May 2009 20:20 Hits: 327 3A Ends in a Tie
As the 2009 OSAA Band and Orchestra Championships unfolded at the LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University Campus, a mix of familiar names and new performers claim trophies. And the 3A competition ends in a tie, something no longer possible in many activities, but an occaisional outcome for the instrumenalists.
The 3A competition openen the week Wednesday morning, and defending champion Warrenton, under the direction of John Hammond, claimed another first place trophy, but only a share of the title, as Jefferson, directed by Heather Clark, also posted the same score of 257.
Grant Union garnered third, with 221 points, and Gold Beach got fourth, with 216 points.
Flu, Finances, and FootballBlogs - CCCougarfan Blog Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Sunday, 03 May 2009 18:10 Hits: 312 Notebook Overflow Strikes As Well
The worldwide Swine flu outbreak has impacted high school sports in Oregon, at least in some communities. Willamina and Chemawa were the first to cancel classes, and therefore contests, late last week. Now, on the heels of the case that prompted Western Oregon university to shut down for at least a long, four day weekend, Central high school of Independence has shut down for a week, in what Central schools superintendent Joseph Hunter termed "a precautionary measure."
On Sunday afternoon, the Forest Grove school district decided to shut down for a couple of days at the beginning of the week.
Whether additional cases lead to additional schools taking measures will be a day to day, even an hour to hour proposition. For now, however, Oregon does not appear to be on the verge of a statewide shutdown, such as Texas and Alabama are facing.

Playoff Notebook, Between TournamentsBlogs - CCCougarfan Blog Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Sunday, 08 March 2009 20:31 Hits: 398 The Stories Beside The Stories
After a week of living in gyms, and in a pickup driving between gyms, it's time to clean out the notebook, before we do it again. As usual, there were plenty of thumbs involved. Some were turned up, some not, and some were used on keyboards.
The economy's impact on the high school (and collegiate) sports scene is unmistakable. Attendance all season is generally down, sometimes way down. People can't afford to go to games as often, if at all, especially out of town. Games that once upon a time you couldn't get into are now being played in front of empty seats, though the really big games still draw. There was a capacity crowd for the Cascade Christian - Horizon Christian championship contest, and the second largest attendance at Pendleton came on a weekday afternoon, when the draw was the epic Portland Christian - Santiam girls' matchup. And ratings are good enough for Fox Sports Northwest to show the 5A and 6A girls' championship games, when they could choose to carry the PAC-10.
To suspend or not to suspend?Blogs - CCCougarfan Blog Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Monday, 02 March 2009 20:13 Hits: 382 That is a complicated question
(Following is an editorial review of some of the issues surrounding the latest episode of off-court conduct effecting events on the floor. Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect that of Oregonprepsports.net, but do reflect the input from a variety of experienced, concerned individuals.)
The Lincoln High School boys’ basketball coach was picked up Saturday, March 21, and charged with DUII. He happens to be David Adelman, who happens to be the son of Rick Adelman, former Chemeketa and Portland Trailblazer coach, and the current coach of the Houston Rockets.

There is currently a proposed amendment before the OSAA Delegate Assembly to reduce the length of seasons, and as a result, the number of contests, that schools in the 3A, 2A, and 1A classes could participate in. The amendment received a first reading at the October meeting of the delegate assembly, and will come up for discussion and a decision at the April meeting.
The proposal, sponsored mostly by representatives from smaller programs in eastern Oregon and northwest Oregon, would reduce the football season to 8 games, and would set the number of basketball, baseball, and softball seasons three less than the current limitation used by schools in all classes. Wrestling, track, and cross country would be allowed two fewer meets, and volleyball would get four fewer matches, and two fewer dates. Similar reductions would be applied to other activities.

North Marion held off Cascade 20-18, in a game decided by the Huskies' ability to make conversions. La Salle stayed alive in the playoff hunt with a 42-17 win in Molalla.
And Stayton tuned up for a run at the playoffs with a 19-6 win in Taft.
