Second Oregon Star Headed for Pepperdine Changes Plans Oregon City star headed to Vanderbilt Oregon City’s Brad Tinsley, the 6A Co-Player of the year, announced his plan to play basketball for the Vanderbilt Commodores of the Southeastern Conference today.
The 6’4” Tinsley, who led the Pioneers to the 6A OSAA State Championship game, won by Grant 63-56, originally signed with Pepperdine. However, when a Pepperdine coaching change happened, an NCAA rule allowed Tinsley to reconsider his decision. The SEC Commodores beat out Wake Forrest and Arizona State for Tinsley’s services. Paul McCoy Heads to Dallas to play for SMU Grant’s 6’1” guard Paul McCoy, who also signed with Pepperdine in November, similarly was able to change his plans after Walberg left Pepperdine. McCoy ended the speculation Wednesday night by making a surprise commitment to play basketball at Southern Methodist University. McCoy, who helped lead Grant to the OSAA Class 6A basketball title win over Tinsley and Oregon City, appeared headed to Virginia or Kentucky. However, SMU's persistence, including lobbying by their new football coach, Grant alum June Jones, paid off. McCoy's mother Maria Adams said "Honestly, even I thought he was going to Virginia." McCoy was an all-state first team selection in both football and basketball, the first athlete from the state’s largest class to receive the dual first team honor in ten years. McCoy is one of the top three sport athletes in the state. In addition to helping Grant reach the state semifinals in football as a wide receiver and defensive back, and winning the basketball state championship, also participates in track and field, and was part of Grant's state championship 4x100 relay team last year.
