Medford Mustangs Legion Team Claims NW Regional, Goes Gunning For National Title
Written by Andy Wooldridge (CCCougarfan) Wednesday, 12 August 2009 20:43 Hits: 805 Mustangs Finish Second The Medford Mustangs fell short again in their second game of the American Legion World Series against Midland, Michigan, losing to the only team that had defeated them in the regional and national tournaments, this time by an 11-4 score.
Midland, Mich. (54-7), who was undefeated at the world series, scored eight runs through four innings, and cruised to an 11-4 victory Tuesday for the American Legion World Series championship at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota.
Medford (48-12) had allowed just eight earned runs in its previous nine postseason games, including the regional tournament.
The Mustangs had compiled a 0.96 postseason ERA entering Tuesday's championship game. Medford would have had to defeat Midland twice to earn a national title, since Midland had previously beat the Mustangs, 4-2 in the opening round of the tournament last Friday.
Midland scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Kyle O'Boyle, Cole Martin and Eric Peterson each had RBI singles for Midland in the first inning, off Medford starter Neil Emerson. All three of those RBI hits came with two outs.
Lewis pitched three innings in relief on short rest, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on three hits. The left hander had his scoreless innings streak snapped at 44 1/3 innings.
Kensinger said he didn't start Lewis because he was going on just two days rest. If there would have been a second title game, Kensinger said Lewis would have started that game.
Medford cut the Midland lead to 8-3, scoring three runs in the sixth inning, but could never rally enough to get close.
Medford claimed the Northwest title with a 14-0 win over Lakeside of Bellevue, WA, Monday night, August 10, after defeating Cheyenne, WY, 3-0 Sunday.

The North squad outscored the South 12-8 in Saturday's three hour long, nine inning opener of the 30th. annual Sterling Savings 4A North/South All-Star game in Roseburg.
Sunday, the South squad broke out even more bats, and twice held off North rallys to claim a pair of seven inning wins, 11-9 and 8-5.
Monarchs edge Bobcats, 2-1, in 2A/1A championship game

KEIZER - In a crisp, well-played game, #1 Umpqua Valley Christian edged #2 Union, 2-1, to capture the 2009 2A/1A baseball championship at Volcanoes Stadium. A solo HR from their leadoff hitter proved the difference for the top-ranked Monarchs from Southern Oregon. The one-run loss was tough for the Bobcat faithful, many of whom arrived from Corvallis, where the Union softball team lost, 1-0, in the girls' 2A/1A title game. Sterling Savings 4A Baseball All-Star Rosters Announced

This year's edition of the annual Sterling Savings Bank 4A High School Baseball Series will be played on Saturday June 13 and Sunday June 14, 2009, at Legion Field in Roseburg OR.
The Saturday night game is a 9 inning game, and begins at 7:00 pm. On Sunday, there will be two 7 inning games, beginning at noon. 2009 Baseball All-State Selections

4 Oregon Fields in the Running for a Makeover

KEIZER - In a marathon match-up between two West Valley League teams, Willamina exploded for 8 runs in the 11th inning and held off WVL rival Westside Christian, 14-9, to claim the 2009 3A baseball championship at Keizer's Volcanoes Stadium. Entering the game, few gave Willamina (22-6) any chance against the Westside Christian juggernaut (23-5) that looked all but invincible entering the game. But nine Eagle errors and several base-running mistakes ensured back-to-back title game losses for Westside Christian.
